About the Course
Storytelling is central to video games, creating immersion and emotional investment for players of all ages. In this camp, students will explore how storytelling and gameplay come together to create memorable experiences and will use GameMaker Studio to build short, story-driven projects with characters, dialogue, and branching choices inspired by beloved indie titles like Undertale. Students will experiment with narrative gameplay elements and explore additional tools like Twine to facilitate the creation of branching dialogue. By the end of camp, students will have hands-on experience designing games that express their creativity through storytelling.
Objectives
Navigate GameMaker’s tools and explore both visual and non-visual scripting options (GML Visual for gameplay elements & GML Code for dialogue)
Build and Organize 2D game levels using layers, tiles, and game objects
Use simple visual scripting and coding to create interactive gameplay elements
Customize and Design game assets with the built-in pixel art editor
Gather, Analyze, and Implement feedback from playtesting sessions

Your Pilot

Bryan
Bryan is a game designer and educator with experience guiding students through professional gaming and audio tools such as Unreal Engine, GameMaker Studio, and Ableton Live. With expertise in game design, development, and sound design he introduces learners to professional workflows while keeping lessons approachable and fun. He encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and iteration as students design and refine interactive media projects.
